A staggering number of beloved babies die during pregnancy, birth and shortly after birth.  And, mothers die during these times, as well.  Some studies indicate that every 90 seconds a mother dies in childbirth.

In some pregnancy situations, it is known before the birth that childbirth is a potential danger to the mother’s life, as in most ectopic pregnancy and in some elective abortion situations.  And in other situations the death of the mother is sudden and unexpected.  Below are some resources and support.  You are also invited to share your story of losing a mother /spouse during pregnancy, childbirth or shortly after birth.  These stories are held in our Maternal Death collection of stories.

Needs of the Motherless Newborn

  • smells of mother, breastmilk, how to change a diaper, skin-to-skin with father, safety
  • long term needs of the motherless child

Needs of the Suddenly Single Parent

  • employment related concerns, FMLA, postpartum doula (guidance in caring for the newborn, sleep, rest, space for planning, permission to grieve), farewell planning support, bereavement support
  • challenges associated with identifying maternal support for children
  • when the time may be right in his life, to allow for an intimate relationship for himself
